The Basics of Poker

Poker

As the world’s most popular card game, Poker has its share of lore. Its name has ties to card hustlers, who cheated unsuspecting opponents. Perhaps this slang term inspired the game, which is a fairly straightforward card game. It is played by two or four people with a deck of twenty cards. The “r” in the word poker was likely added to confuse players who understood slang. The game’s earliest recorded origin is a Mississippi riverboat encounter between two or four people.

In the game, the best hands are made up of five cards, called a “hand.” The best hand is the one with the highest value. If there are more than two pairs, the higher card wins. Otherwise, the lowest hand is a pair of aces. The best hand will win the pot. This strategy is known as bluffing. It can make or break a poker game. There are several strategies that players can use to get the best possible hand.

In most variations of poker, players “buy in” by purchasing poker chips. When playing with seven or more players, the dealer will supply the chips. Each player begins with a bet, called an ante. Once the players have placed their ante, they can now see their cards. After the round of betting is over, each player may discard up to three cards and take new ones from the top of the deck. The next round of betting will take place.
