Slot Receivers in the NFL

The slot is the area in the offensive zone between the face-off circles. There are two main types of slots: the low slot (just in front of the goaltender) and the high slot (in the middle of the ice above the face-off circles). In ice hockey, the slot represents the most advantageous shooting zone because a shot in the slot has the best shot probability without deflection.

In the NFL, a slot receiver can run a straight downfield route or one that turns inward. The slot is increasingly prominent with players such as Branden Cooks and Tyreek Hill, who can stretch defenses vertically using pure speed. A slot receiver is also an effective option in the catch-and-run game, as they can run shorter routes in the route tree such as slants.

Japanese slot machines are highly regulated with integrated circuitry, and have six levels. When a player hits a winning combination, he or she receives credits based on the paytable. The symbols on the machine vary depending on the theme. Classic symbols include bells, fruits, and stylized lucky sevens. Some slots also have bonus features.

Slot receivers line up on either side of the field and can be as many as three players on the field. They may also be mixed between the two sides. A team with multiple slot receivers is known as an Inside Slot and an Outside Slot. Another position that resembles the slot is the slot cornerback. It’s a position that can support multiple receivers and is often called the Nickel position.
